About Woori Yallock

On the road between Lilydale and Warburton, Woori Yallock is a rural village 50 kilometres east of Melbourne. The Woori Yallock Creek, which springs from the south in the Yarra Ranges near Emerald and joins the Yarra River a few kilometres north of the township, is 2 kilometres from the settlement. The area north of the township is flat with various billabongs, whilst the region south of the township is hilly to undulating.

The Wooriallock pastoral station (12,950 hectares) was built on the creek in the early 1860s, and the name is likely to be derived from Aboriginal language meaning “flowing stream” or “ample water,” a reference to the creek or the Yarra River flats. In the 1870s, farmers began making selections, and in 1874, a primary school was established. In 1886, a hotel and a post office were built near the Woori Yallock Creek. When the railway line to Warburton commenced operation in 1901, it travelled through the township, with stations at Killara (a property owned by David Syme) and the settlement. It signalling the start of an era of tourist visits to the area. With saw logs carried in by narrow gauge trams from the south-easterly hill area, the railway line also offered an incentive for timber processing at Woori Yallock.

The township’s football team competed in the Upper Yarra League in 1906, and a leisure reserve was established on private land south of the township.

Woori Yallock was a tiny rural settlement until the 1970s, when the population was more than quadrupled by residential developments. (The railway line’s closure in 1965 merely accepted the shift to automobile transportation.)

The township is centred on the Warburton Highway and the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road crossroads. On the bypassed Old Warburton Road, the hotel was slightly obscured from view. In 2014, it was completely destroyed by fire. A Presbyterian church and a kindergarten are located close to the retail centre, while the school (181 students in 2014) is located next to the railway line, which has been converted into a linear reserve. An oval, as well as tennis and netball courts, are part of the sports reserve.
